Break through blocks with secure open access
Psiphon is a free circumvention tool built to help you reach content that would otherwise be out of reach. It blends VPN, SSH, and HTTP proxy techniques to route traffic around government filters and geo restrictions, automatically discovering new entry points to improve your odds of connecting to blocked sites and services. Originating in Canada and used by millions across more than 200 countries, it was conceived to be straightforward for newcomers and light on system resources.
What sets Psiphon apart is its community-driven backbone. The service is open source and operates a centrally managed yet geographically diverse network that spans thousands of proxy servers. As more people use it, the network expands organically, creating more pathways into restricted destinations. The result is a practical option for tuning into news, social platforms, or adding a layer of protection on public Wi-Fi when your normal route is closed.
Privacy is handled with clear guardrails. Psiphon says it does not alter the contents of your tunneled data and does not share user information with third parties. It does, however, collect usage and diagnostic metrics that help maintain the service. This includes session duration, the amount of data transferred, and the country, city, and ISP of the connection’s origin. In some cases it may log how many bytes are sent to a particular domain or server IP. According to the project, this information is retained for up to 90 days.
It is important to note Psiphon’s priority is access, not maximum anonymity. If your single highest goal is to stay untraceable, tools built specifically for anonymity may be a better fit. Also, always consider local regulations before using any censorship-circumvention service.
Pros:
- Unblocks censored and region-restricted sites
- Combines VPN, SSH, and HTTP proxy with auto discovery of entry points
- Open source with a large, growing community network
- Simple, lightweight design suitable for beginners
- No sharing of collected data with third parties
Cons:
- Collects usage and network metadata for up to 90 days
- Focuses on access rather than full anonymity
- Use may be subject to local laws and policies
