Live datamoshing, one tap away

Live datamoshing magic in your pocket

MoshUp is a creative video tool from PyteByte that lets you build glitch art as you record. Instead of applying a filter after the fact, it fuses two captures in real time so motion from your second take pushes pixels from the first, producing that signature datamosh look.

Getting started is straightforward. Press and hold the shutter to film your first clip, then record a different scene. The app offers two preview modes, Contrast and Blend, to help you line up the second shot with precision. These views make it easier to judge edges and overlaps before you commit, which is crucial for controlled artifacts rather than messy smears.

Technique matters. Avoid heavy shaking, since aggressive movement can cause the pixels from your initial capture to vanish quickly, resulting in cleaner frames than you might want. Shooting in bright conditions helps minimize noise, and including bold structures or clear shapes gives the glitching more to chew on, leading to stronger, more interesting results.

MoshUp also builds in playful repetition tools. You can loop frames in sequence or at random by swiping up on the record button while filming, or by holding the screen after a take. Exports are flexible, with the option to save as a video or a still image. An optional full version expands the toolkit by letting you import clips or photos from your gallery and combine them, which is great if you want to blend pre-shot material with new footage.

The interface is clean and easy to grasp, making it welcoming for newcomers who want to experiment with datamoshing and blend effects. One caveat: some Huawei phones may encounter issues. If you are drawn to live, hands-on glitch creation and want fine control over how frames collide, MoshUp is a compelling pick, with a worthwhile upgrade path for deeper mixing.
