Sid Meier’s Civilization VI brings its sprawling 4X design to touchscreens with surprising fidelity. You chart a civilization from humble beginnings to modern supremacy, tackling the classic loop of explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. The headline system change, unstacked cities, lets you place districts and improvements across surrounding tiles, so early planning and terrain choices matter throughout a campaign.

This edition mirrors the core PC experience but adds guidance that helps both series newcomers and returning fans adjust to taps and swipes. Onboarding is notably friendlier, with tutorials that explain interconnected systems like science, culture, and diplomacy while also easing the transition to touch controls. A generous trial lets you play 60 turns for free, enough to sample the pace of development, meet rival leaders, and test a few opening strategies before committing.

If you want to go all in, the two major expansions, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, are available as optional purchases. There is also a set of six Civilization and Scenario Packs that broaden your toolbox with additional leaders and nations, including Australia, Macedon, Nubia, and Poland. These packs introduce fresh challenges and playstyles, adding variety for those who crave repeated runs.

There are trade-offs. Compared with the PC release, this version is reported to suffer frequent performance issues, and the pricing sits higher than the original platform. Veterans may find that combination frustrating, especially during longer sessions where late-game complexity can push the limits.

Even with those caveats, this is a feature-rich strategy suite that captures what makes the series enduring: thoughtful city placement, layered decision-making, and a satisfying sense of progression.
