Free UPI acceptance with loans and bill pay for Indian merchants
BharatPe for Merchants promises a one-stop toolkit for small businesses that operate offline in India. It focuses on simplifying how shop owners take payments, funneling money from multiple UPI apps into a single interface. It is not a consumer wallet, and it is tailored exclusively to merchants.
The headline draw is cost: you can accept customer payments without transaction fees, including transfers initiated from other UPI apps. Card acceptance is also supported at zero charges via the company’s card machine integration. Beyond collecting money, the app adds everyday banking conveniences, such as tracking incoming payments through SMS and notifications, sending funds to bank accounts, and paying utility bills from the same dashboard. Access to working capital is another hook, with loans offered at competitive rates and without collateral or guarantees, which will appeal to cash-strapped retailers.
In practice, though, reliability is a sore spot. Users report a high rate of failed transactions, which is a critical issue for any point-of-sale workflow. The tie-in with the BharatPe Card Machine, also known as BharatSwipe, often refuses to cooperate, undermining the otherwise attractive no-fee card acceptance pitch. When problems arise, support can be difficult to reach, with responses frequently routed to recorded messages rather than timely human assistance. The service is also limited to India, so it is not an option for cross-border operations.
If you value zero-fee UPI acceptance and easy access to loans, the feature set is compelling. However, the current stability concerns mean it may be risky as your sole payment solution. Merchants should weigh the savings and convenience against the possibility of failed payments and inconsistent support, and consider having a contingency plan in place while evaluating it.
