Modern Combat 5: Blackout aims high as the fifth entry in Gameloft Bucharest’s shooter series, pushing a full first person experience built around sharp gunplay, a snappy campaign, and a deep set of online options. It splits its time between bite sized solo operations and competitive arenas, and it largely succeeds when the bullets start flying.

The campaign drops you into short, high intensity missions that hop between striking locales like Tokyo and Venice. These stages are designed for quick sessions, putting spectacle and firefights first. The plot, which follows Phoenix as he peels back a global conspiracy, exists mostly to shuttle you from one encounter to the next. Characters feel one note, and the dialogue rarely elevates the stakes.

Customization is a clear strength. Multiple soldier classes each bring distinct perks and weapon loadouts, letting you lean into stealth, assault, or support styles. That variety carries nicely into multiplayer. Modes such as Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Battle Royale give squads plenty to chew on, and features like clan style squads and private chat make it easier to coordinate and trash talk with friends.

Presentation is a highlight. Detailed environments, crisp effects like underwater sequences, and touches of dynamic weather show real care. The audio mix hits the right beats for explosions and gunfire, although the voice acting lacks punch and emotion, which undercuts the story’s bigger moments. When measured against PC and console shooters, the overall production does not always reach the same bar, but within its space it remains eye catching.

If you want fast missions, flexible classes, and a stack of competitive modes, Modern Combat 5 delivers plenty to play. Just temper expectations for the narrative and performances, and come for the action above all else.
