Choice-driven fairytale horror with striking art and voice work
Killmonday Games spins a twisted bedtime story in Little Misfortune, an interactive narrative about an eight-year-old named Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez who longs to bring Eternal Happiness to her mother. Guided by the ever-present Mr. Voice, she leaves home and wanders into ominous forests and unsettling neighborhoods where whimsy and menace live side by side.
This is not a puzzle gauntlet but a story you move through at a measured, side-scrolling pace. You walk left and right, examine objects, and pick dialogue options that can echo later. A glitter mechanic lets Misfortune toss sparkles onto grim sights, a disarming flourish that captures the game’s sweet-and-sour personality. Choices matter more than reflexes, and the few puzzles are deliberately light to keep attention on characters and conversation.
Presentation is a standout. The hand-drawn animation is inviting without losing its eerie edges, and the voice performances give real texture to both Misfortune’s innocence and Mr. Voice’s slippery charm. The script balances absurd humor with biting commentary, drawing from the same universe as the studio’s cult favorite Fran Bow.
That sugar coating, however, conceals deeply adult subject matter. The story brushes against real-world trauma, including abuse and suicide, and the contrast with the cartoon look can be jarring. At times the darkness feels heightened to the point of discomfort, and the clash between childlike jokes and heavy themes will not work for everyone. It is also a lean interactive experience, with limited mechanics and mostly conversational engagement.
If you want a choice-driven tale that prizes mood, performance, and character above complex gameplay, Little Misfortune is a bold, memorable journey. Just do not be fooled by the cute exterior. This is a cautionary fable with teeth, best suited for players who appreciate narrative risks and can handle its bleak undercurrents.
