Translate on screen with a smart floating tool
Hi Dictionary turns everyday reading and chatting into a bilingual breeze. It brings more than 100 languages to your fingertips, with text detection, offline support, a built-in dictionary, and a camera translator that recognizes words from images. While the language catalog is broad rather than exhaustive, it covers most common needs and doubles as a handy learning companion.
The standout feature is the floating translator ball. It hovers over other apps so you can drag it to on-screen text and get a translation without switching contexts. When you are done, it collapses into a tidy tab, and you can disable it entirely if you prefer a cleaner screen. If you are working with selected text, the clipboard tool steps in: highlight a phrase, choose Hi Dictionary from the system options, and a subtle pop-up at the bottom displays the result. Between the floating ball, the pop-up, and quick access from the notification bar, you can tailor how translations appear.
Beyond raw translation, Hi Dictionary offers extras that nudge you toward better vocabulary. Word of the Day introduces new English terms, suggested phrases add context to lookups, and you can even correct translations to improve results for everyone. It can also process chat bubbles in social apps, either by auto detection or by setting a friend’s language in the menu.
There are trade-offs. The app asks for special permissions, including accessibility and the ability to appear over other apps, which are required for the on-screen tools. Repositioning the translator ball can be finicky, and chat bubbles sometimes need the ball placed at a very specific spot to trigger a result. The app also benefits from frequent updates managed in its settings. Still, with a user-friendly layout and flexible display options, Hi Dictionary is a practical, free translator that excels at quick, on-screen understanding.
