The real star is the scale and liberty on offer. San Andreas spans three distinct cities, plus countryside and deserts, encouraging you to drift from story quests to spontaneous chaos at will. Drive across Los Santos, cruise the bridges to San Fierro, or gamble in Las Venturas, each area sprinkled with recognizable landmarks and side diversions. Activities range widely: street races, robberies, aerial skirmishes, and turf wars give you a steady stream of challenges between main missions.

Progress is tied to a robust stat system. What you do shapes CJ: exercise builds muscle and stamina, overeating adds fat, and training weapons improves accuracy and handling. Style matters too. Clothes, haircuts, and tattoos influence sex appeal and respect, which can impact relationships and crew size. Customization is generous, though apparel choices can feel limited in places. Tattoo shops offer distinct designs across neighborhoods at different prices, and ink can boost your reputation.

Atmosphere is elevated by a superb soundtrack that hops between hip hop, rock, and electronic, perfectly fitting late-night drives and high-stakes shootouts. Age does show, however. Visuals and animations lack the polish of newer entries, and some story threads stumble, with a few characters fading without satisfying development or backstory.
