Die and rise again in a ruthless roguelike platformer

Dead Cells delivers a fast, punishing loop where every life teaches you something new. You inhabit the Prisoner, a formless presence that animates a corpse, and carve through an ever-shifting island fortress filled with traps, elite foes, and towering Keepers. Levels are procedurally generated, so routes, secrets, and enemy layouts keep changing, and permadeath means anything you carry can vanish in an instant. What persists are the cells you invest between runs to unlock new gear and permanent upgrades, turning failure into progress.

Combat is the star. Swift 2D encounters reward pattern recognition, well-timed dodges, and smart loadouts. Despite the difficulty, the basics are approachable, with easy-to-grasp mechanics that quickly click. You can chart your pace too: scour every corner for blueprints, take branching paths that suit your build, or sprint straight to the next biome if you are feeling bold.

Quality of life is thoughtfully handled. A revamped interface presents clear icons and a clean layout. Two modes let you tailor the feel: Original for full control or Auto-Hit to automate melee and reduce input strain. Touchscreen options include swipes for evasive moves and deep customization for button size and placement, and it supports external controllers if you prefer a pad. Daily challenges unlock after beating the game, offering bite-sized tests that push your skills and routing.

Optional paid DLC keeps the experience fresh with new biomes, enemies, and weapons. A standout is Return to Castlevania, which teams you with Alucard and Richter on a quest against the Ruler of Darkness, adding two atmospheric zones, nine new monsters, 14 thematic weapons, and three bosses inspired by classic Transylvanian myth.

The only catch is that repetition can creep in if you stick solely to the base content. Still, for players who relish mastery, branching routes, and constant experimentation, Dead Cells remains a razor sharp slasher with serious staying power.
