Customize accessibility with TalkBack and on-screen controls
Android Accessibility Suite brings together a set of tools designed to make devices easier to use for people who need alternative ways to see, hear, or control the interface. It is free to use and especially helpful for users with low vision or limited dexterity, offering options for hands-free interaction or operation with a switch device.
Everything lives inside your device’s settings, where you toggle individual services and grant the permissions they require. Each feature includes concise, built-in guidance, so you can learn how it works as you go without hunting elsewhere.
TalkBack is the standout component. It enables eyes-free navigation using touch gestures, speaks what is on screen, and even provides an on-screen Braille keyboard for typing without needing physical keys. If you prefer selective audio feedback, Select to Speak can read aloud only the items you tap, which is convenient for reading snippets from apps or webpages. There is also a large, persistent accessibility menu that floats on screen, giving quick access to essentials like volume, power, and screen lock. That means fewer presses of hardware buttons and more consistent control across apps.
The main caveat is a recurring issue with Select to Speak not stopping promptly after it starts reading, particularly when you only wanted a short segment from a long passage. This hiccup can interrupt your workflow and may require extra steps to regain focus.
Even with that limitation, Android Accessibility Suite remains a robust collection of services that broadens how you can interact with your device. The combination of gesture-driven control, spoken feedback, a Braille keyboard, and an always-available menu makes it a compelling option for users who need adaptable, on-screen support to navigate and perform everyday tasks.
